Abstract:
The Fiona Stanley Hospital Cockburn Mental Health Service (Cockburn Health) provides pioneering women-centred, trauma-informed, and holistic inpatient care. Within this model, occupational therapy plays a critical role in supporting recovery and enhancing well-being for women facing complex mental health challenges.
At Cockburn Health, occupational therapists embody the principles of woman-centred care by recognizing each woman as a whole person and tailoring interventions to respect their autonomy, voice, and participation in decision-making. Their approach integrates an understanding of the reproductive life cycle, spanning menarche, the perinatal period, and menopause and how physical, hormonal, psychological, and sociocultural factors influence mental health across these stages. This includes specialized support for women diagnosed with autism and ADHD, addressing how hormonal changes affect cognition, emotional regulation, and impulsivity. Tailored strategies help women navigate these transitions while fostering resilience.
Trauma-informed systems at Cockburn Health are strengths-based, future-focused, and skill-building, emphasizing safety, respect, and dignity. Occupational therapy interventions incorporate evidence-based practices, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Creative activities, guided group programs, and practical life skills training empower women to reclaim their identities, rebuild strengths, and foster meaningful community connections.
By embracing trauma-informed, recovery-focused, and woman-centred approaches, occupational therapy at Cockburn Health empowers women to achieve meaningful recovery and lasting resilience.
