Abstract:

Purpose:

To evaluate implementation of the state-wide Health Education Training Institute (HETI) Allied Health Clinical Supervision Program in Northern Sydney Local Health District (NSLHD).

Background:

Effective clinical reflective supervision benefits supervisees, supervisors, and the workplace. The program aimed to improve supervision consistency, strengthen district-wide practices, and establish a reflective practice culture in NSLHD.

Methods:

The program consists of allied health clinical supervision training resources to develop confident and capable allied health supervisors. It is designed to be adapted and delivered flexibly by Local Health Districts with train-the-trainer support from HETI.

NSLHD adapted the program resources and created an implementation framework in consultation with key stakeholders. Supervision champions were appointed and trained, then rolled out the program via multidisciplinary workshops. All program participants were allied health clinicians.

Participant acceptance was evaluated through feedback surveys.

Results:

The 46 supervision champions trained 172 clinicians via 24 workshops.

100% of participants indicated that the content was relevant and are now confident applying reflective supervision models. Participants appreciated the practical activities and networking opportunities. Champions developed their facilitation skills and enjoyed sharing their experiences.

Positive implementation factors include:

– HETI support to upskill champions

– Multidisciplinary participation facilitating sharing of diverse experiences

– Focus on core content to ensure the training's integrity and consistency

– Building of internal facilitation capacity, adding relevance and depth to the workshops.

Conclusion:

The implementation strategy successfully engaged clinicians and improved supervision knowledge and skills.

Next steps include ongoing professional development, establishing policy frameworks, and evaluating educational outcomes for NSLHD.
