Management of traumatic cardiac arrest: an outcome predictors focused approach

Alan Garner

Abstract:

The prevailing paradigm in management of traumatic cardiac arrest (TCA) focuses on identifying and correcting the likely treatable causes from among the 4Hs and 4Ts of classic medical cardiac arrest management, whilst de-emphasising rhythm checks and chest compressions.

The presentation will review:

  • The evidence for improved outcomes associated with the current TCA paradigm from systems that have adopted it.
  • Low flow and no flow states in TCA and implications for intra-arrest management
  • Recent evidence for prognostic indicators of ROSC in TCA
  • Suggested algorithm modifications that incorporate considerations of low flow versus no flow states, and early identification of the strongest predictors of ROSC to direct intervention
