Abstract

Introduction: Teenage motherhood can be associated with poorer health and wellbeing outcomes for both mother and baby. In Australia’s largest maternity hospital, Mater Mothers Hospital partners with community groups such as Micah Projects to strive to create an environment that alleviates some of the healthcare barriers for this cohort. Perinatal services are offered in an easily accessible location off campus in a relaxed, informal atmosphere. Healthcare is provided by an experienced, consistent and multidisciplinary team (MDT), in a group environment that fosters opportunity for friendship and peer support for young mothers.

With a particular focus on both musculoskeletal and pelvic health, Physiotherapists work within this MDT to help manage and prevent maternal health conditions commonly associated with pregnancy and birth and optimise postpartum recovery.

Aim: As part of a Quality Initiative we are currently measuring the outcomes of this unique perinatal model of care (MOC) particularly in relation to Physiotherapy service provision.

Method: Information is being gathered via chart audits and consumer engagement processes with both pregnant women and feedback from the MDT members.

Results/ Discussion: (Finalisation May 2023). Current indications are trending towards very positive outcomes for this perinatal physiotherapy service “delivered differently” in terms of both consumer satisfaction, and improved knowledge and skills of participants in managing common musculoskeletal and pelvic health concerns. These outcomes and the impact of this innovative model of care can be learned from and perhaps trialled with other patient groups as we strive for excellence in the care of those most vulnerable in our communities.
