Abstract

Professional supervision for allied health is an essential component to maintain ethical, professional and best practice standards of the organisation and the profession, while providing personal support and encouragement in relation to the professional practice. The internal programme of training for allied health staff at Te Whatu Ora Waitematā required a comprehensive review to ensure the programme was current, responsive and meeting the needs of supervisors and supervisees.
The primary aim of this quality improvement project was to develop a robust professional supervision framework for allied health which included a clear professional development pathway, innovative and technology-based solutions, and which added value to the existing programme.
The resulting professional supervision framework is now hosted on a shared electronic learning management system where learners can complete on-line components and book onto facilitated workshops. It identifies specific courses at four progressive levels, starting with supervisee training at level one (1), core supervisor training at level two (2), and advanced training for supervisors and trainers at levels three (3) and four (4). The project also introduced new material for the courses including; teaching videos, participant workbooks, trainer guides and teaching plans and professional development pathways and pre-requisites for trainers
The project has been successful in using innovative ways to develop and improve the professional supervision programme for allied health at Te Whatu Ora Waitematā. The resources that support the programme are now structured and comprehensive having used creative and innovative solutions to achieve success. The feedback from participants and other key stakeholders, both within and outside of the programme, reflects the success of the implemented outcomes.
