Abstract
With the introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme, allied health clinicians are increasingly required to complete assessments of functioning for individuals with disabilities. Some professions have historically completed similar assessments, such as occupational therapists’ occupational assessments or psychologists’ assessments of adaptive behaviour. However, there is an increasing need for consistent practice in the assessment of functioning across professionals and upskilling clinicians for this expanding area of practice. The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) and its associated Core Sets and other resources are a framework that can be used to structure and guide assessments of functioning.
This presentation will give attendees an overview of functioning, the ICF and associated resources and how they can be used within an assessment of functioning for individuals with disabilities. The presentation will also cover the decision-making process when selecting an assessment tool, and the information requirements outlined in the NDIS act. Attendees will develop an understanding of the ICF and skills to apply the ICF to assessments of functioning within the disability context.
